An early childhood center must meet standards regarding the facility staff and curriculum.
- The program will be visited by the appropriate authorities prior to being granted a license, including a Health department Consultant and Fire and Buildings Department Inspectors.
- The license must be renewed every two years, and be prominently displayed.
- There must be a certified teacher for each group of children ages 2 to 5.
- For infant and toddler groups (children under 2 years) a group teacher must have an Associates degree in Early Childhood Education, a Child Development Associate Credential, a High School Diploma, or a GED with one year documented work experience with infants. NOTE: many professionals believe that higher education requirements are needed for staff in infant and toddler programs.
- Staff-to-child ratios and maximum group size cannot be exceeded and vary based on the age of the children.
- The director must have full teacher certification and at least two years of teaching experience.
