After School Care

After school care settings include schools, community agencies and centers, day care centers, religious institutions, summer camp facilities, family child care homes, and your own home. Educational or enrichment programs (e.g. sports, music, art) are also available if they fit your scheduling needs.

Begin your search before the end of the previous school year. Most in-school and after-school programs are closed in the summer, and do not usually open again until October. Identify programs you can use for the month of September. You should look for:

  • Challenging, yet age-appropriate activities such as drama, music, sports and games, as well as quiet time for homework and down time

  • A comfortable, safe environment with indoor and outdoor play

  • Clean, durable, age-appropriate equipment, toys and games

  • A warm, supportive staff that encourages independence, experimentation, problem-solving and a healthy view of competition

  • Clear rules for behavior, with positive discipline that teaches children to resolve conflicts on their own, rather than using threats and punishment

  • Appetizing and nutritious snacks

  • Regular opportunities for communication between staff and parents

Please note: The Center for Children's Initiatives does not license, recommend or endorse any one provider over another, we do encourage parents to exercise their right to evaluate and select the child care program that best meets the needs of their family.
