Allow at least three weeks to find and evaluate a program. You will need to make appointments, speak with staff and have time to evaluate which program suits you and your child's needs. You should make a thorough and more personal evaluation.
Begin with a telephone interview. This narrows down your search to programs worth further exploration. Always start with the basic criteria relevant for all child care options: hours, age groups, fees, and licensing. During your visit, you should:
- Observe your child's potential classroom.
- Tour the entire facility.
- Talk in depth with the director.
Any program, day or night, that provides child care services for 3 or more children under 6 years of age for five or more hours per week and that operates for more than 30 days during any 12 month period must have a license issued by the New York City Department of Health. The license must be renewed every two years, and be prominently displayed. Ask about the ratio of staff-to-children, and maximum group size, which are also regulated, as well as the qualifications of each staff member.

Please note: Child Care, Inc. does not license, recommend or endorse any one provider over another, we do encourage parents to exercise their right to evaluate and select the child care program that best meets the needs of their family.
